This article will go over just a few important types of footings, this way you can learn their uses and benefits.

A safe foundation under your building is not something that should be taken lightly. Keep reading to learn more about the different shapes and types of concrete footings.

What Are Concrete Footings?

If you have read this far you must be wondering: what are concrete footings used for? Concrete footings ensure that a foundation is stable and sturdy. Their purpose is to support the foundation, so it will not settle or fail.

Footings have rebar reinforcements that are inside the concrete. They are most often poured into excavated trenches before the foundation is finished.

Concrete footings are important on properties that have imperfect soil conditions. Professionals assess soil conditions and the size of the structure before deciding the proper width, depth, and placement of the footings.

The Use and Benefits of Spread Footings

Spread footings’ design distributes the weight of the structure across a large area. This allows for better stability and lessens the amount of cracking caused by settlement.

More benefits of spread footings include the following.

  • Soil stabilizes around the structure’s base
  • The footing is in contact with the entirety of the foundation meaning there is a low risk of foundation failure
  • The cost of design, construction and control is low

Spread footings are often used for structures that will include the construction of a basement. Their design makes it easy to build.

The Use and Benefits of Stepped Footings

Stepped footings are used in structures that need grade transitions for foundations. There are many reasons a building may need stepped footings. Often, it is because the building needs construction on an incline.

Stepped footings benefit its users by becoming more affordable and more stable than other types of footings on sloped soil. Stepped footings are also beneficial to create lower levels with frost protection in colder climates.

The Use and Benefits of Strapped Footings

Strapped footings are made of two isolated footings connected by a strap. The strap acts as a connector for the two footings so they may perform as a unit.

Strapped footings are used on soil that can withstand quite a bit of pressure and on buildings that have columns that are far apart.

You may also use combined footing on a building with columns that are far apart, but you will find that the costs will add up quickly. Strapped footings are the most cost-effective option in this scenario.
