Keep reading to learn all about how to stripe a parking lot, and why it is a great idea for your building’s lot.

Choosing a Layout

When designing a parking lot, it is highly recommended that you use a professional service. While there is no doubting that you are capable of handling your own parking lot line striping, there is more to it than paint.

A lot of engineering and math goes into finding the optimal layout for your parking lot. If your parking lot is not well designed, it will lead to traffic issues and lead to car accidents.

It is important to know what size you want your parking spots to be before you begin painting the lines. A typical parking spot is 9 feet wide by 18 feet long. Your lines are 4 inches wide and 15mm thick.

You also need to take into account ADA regulations to ensure that you are providing accessible parking to all.

Choosing Parking Lot Striping Paint

There are a couple of different types of paint that you can choose from for your parking lot striping paint. One of the options is water-based paint, and the other is oil-based paint.

Water-based paint’s benefits are that it is less expensive and environmentally friendly. It also dries faster than oil-based paint. Its primary drawbacks are that it doesn’t last as long and it chips in cold weather.

Oil-based paint is more expensive, but that added cost brings added durability and longer-lasting parking striping. They’re a much better option for areas with cold weather because they don’t freeze and chip.

Steps For Parking Lot Striping

Once you’ve decided on a paint type and layout, you can start taking practical steps to get your parking lot painted.

First, you will want to get the surface of your parking lot ready. It is important that the surface is clean and dry for the adhesion of the paint. This makes the job much easier for the parking lot striping machine to accurately paint the striping.

You’ll also want to choose the right day for your parking lot striping. Don’t begin striping until temperatures have been above freezing for a full 24 hours and make sure there is no precipitation in the forecast.

Once you have both of those steps taken care of you can start striping your parking lot. Go slowly and make sure to do two layers for your stripes in order to get the best results.

Ready for Your Perfect Parking Lot?

A neat and professional-looking parking lot provides a host of benefits for not only you and your employees but also your customers. Parking lot striping gives your building a much cleaner and orderly appearance.
